Title: Understanding advertising
Lesson aim
By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to use conjunctions to connect ideas related to advertisements.
PRONOUNCIATION:
VOCABULARY:
Evelyn: Well, I think the impact of advertising is mutlifacted I think the most straightforward impact is you can quickly learn about a product from advertising and decide if you want the product or not nowadays people are making advertisements more compact and it can even make it educational I think it makes people feel like watching advertisment.
-
YiFei: I think in most ocassions we are not focusinf on advertismeent but they will subconsciously come to mind if we tend to buy products we try buy ones we have heard of before I think thats how they affect me
-
Emily: In my opinion, advertisments can always get me to know about the product if I know it it will give me a very psoitive impression on the product it will try to persuade me to buy it so I will decide to buy the product that advertised and sometimes it will have some exaggerate items sometimes it mislead me about the effects of the product.
-
fu: Firstly we can see advertsising on the newspaper and online news actually everyone will be affected by adversiting but for me when I want to buy something I shoulld consider the price or quality so I will be a little affected by the advertising maybe when I do not know what to buy maybe the price and quality is the same maybe I will choose the brand.
-
Bob: I noticed that they advertise products with some attractive colorful colour like they advertise this product with heavy bright colour this kind of colour make me more excited than normal so I can’t stand to buy it so I think its a one unique technique.
-
King: I think nowadays advertising is everywhere in our lives in my opinion the advertsing can advance the wants for goods I think the adverising it will be in good quality or service so adveritsing is very important and I would like to buy something with advertising from the public.
-
Eve: Yeah. because we can see a lot of advertisement like the short videos on the TV or the billboards so buy something and you do not know or can’t decide which brand to buy so some advertisements can remind you to buy that brand.

Grammar
Passive voice: students are encouraged; courses are offered; classes are taught; etc.
Were you a bright student at school?
Bob
I wasn’t a bright student at school.
My scores were poor for every examination that I took and my teachers were never proud of my result.
I think I wasn’t bright or sharp.
Amy
I was a bright student during my Primary and Middle school years.
I was the Captain of my class and well liked by my teachers.
During High School, I was a bright student in the first year and thereafter started joining the wrong group which caused me to lose focus of my education.
Jenson
I share the same experience as Amy.
I was a bright student during middle and primary school and scored top marks.
However during my high school years the scores were recorded according to diligence.
I believe that intelligence is related to our genes.
If you are just diligent you can still get high scores but it takes a lot of hard work and consistency.
Ray
I wasn’t bright but spent a lot of time dedicated to my studies.
My teachers liked me and I tried my best to get good grades.
Jamin
I’m particularly good at science, Math and physics and won regional competitions.
I’m not good at learning languages and I feel like I don’t have the talent or skill required.
Wewei
When I was a child, I didn’t realize or follow the correct strategies to develop good learning/ academic habits.
After entering middle and high school, I successfully passed my examinations.
Eric
I don’t think that I was a bright student at school as at that age, I hadn’t realized the importance of education.
After Graduating, I realized how important education is and as a result I am also taking EF classes.
Ray
I had a lot of homework that needed to be finished on time.
Exams were scheduled to be taken.
Eric
I had to wake up early and go to bed late so that I have enough time to finish my homework.
There was a lot of pressure and an exam had to be taken for University admission.
It was a terrible yet interesting experience.
Weiwei
During my high school phase/years, I was under a lot of pressure and didn’t have enough time for a social life or hobbies.
Bob
I remember not having much opportunity to socialize with my peers or the community.
My mom would prepare my schedule in advance so that I could prioritize my studies.
I was required to arrive at school by 7am and would go to bed at 10pm.
Each day in high school felt repetitive, like a copy-and-paste of the same events.
Amy
My life was complicated because I had an older brother who, due to his intelligence, was accepted into a prestigious university.
I tried to stand up for myself and had a boyfriend during my second year of high school.
During the first year, I was placed in the top 5 but in the following year I was in the lowest ranking.
The high expectations and strained relationship with my parents led me to go through one of the most challenging phases of my life.
Jenson
When I was in my first grade of high school I was chosen as an inaugurate and found myself surrounded by intense competition.
It was a stressful situation and I continually/continuously. felt the pressure and eventually requested to be moved to a regular class so that my academic achievements could be recognized.
Thereafter I followed the instructions of my teacher and tried my best to achieve success.
Jamin
Most students typically deal with a heavy workload and countless homework as well as additional tutoring classes.
Some schools require students to wear uniforms and adhere to policies (Rules and regulations.)
Students are expected to manage their time and engage in self-study.
Eric
Most experiences are quite similar.
Examinations, studying and homework seems to be a trend.
Amy appeared to feel pressured by the expectations set by her older brother.
Weiwei
My classmates share similar experiences, such as pressure from homework, school, and family expectations.
Personally, I didn’t face much pressure from my parents.
Bob
The similarities include, taking examinations, strictly adhering to the schedule (arrival and dismissal times) as well as routine behaviors.
Our backgrounds vary, as some parents have a positive relationship with their children, while others are more strict.
Some students would use accommodation provided by the school - boarding school/hostel.
Amy
It seems like studying hard and being occupied academically are trends.
Most students had a good relationship with their parents and there wasn’t any anger issues faced.
Jenson
I had to face a lot of homework, examinations and pressure from teachers.
It feels as though we were conditioned or shaped into accepting the norm.
Some students were rebellious during their school years.
Ray
My classmates are from China which means that our experiences are similar.
We were expected to get into University but the difference might be the romance/love which in my opinion is quite special.
Jamin
I had a strict schedule and limited activities with more time spent on academics.
Every morning we participated in physical activities.
I focused on entertainment, and it seems like I played computer games instead of attended additional classes.
