Discuss the issue: both sides’ perspectives
Brainstorm solutions to the problem
Agree on a course of action
Group 1: James, Lily, Sophie
Printing for the clients or meetings
He can write some notes on the paper
He may bring them back home and study the documents
Easy to handle to prepare for meetings and presentation
Group 2: Cherry, Jun
Mia wants to protect the environment.
It will be noisy to use the printer all the time.
Some confidential information may be leaked.
Save money for the company (being cost efficient)
It only wastes the papers.
Group 3: Alan, Bob
Mia is close to the printer so she is disturbed by the noise -> She can change her seat to be a bit faraway from the printer, or move the printer to the corner, or provide a single room for printing.
Add more devices like tablets, so the employees will not need to print so much document.
Group 1: Alan, Bob
Abby will be mad at John’s criticism. She is doing her job, so the criticism might hurt her.
John is too rough in giving the criticism. If he make the criticism softer, they probably will not suffer from the conflict.
Group 2: Jun, Cherry
John might think that Abby is selfish, and she is not considerate of others who are also working.
Abby’s behavior can interrupt the others’ productivity.
Group 3: Sophie, Lily, James
Both Abby and John should apologize to each other, and to everyone in the office for disturbing them.
Long term - establish a telephone room to focus on their call with the clients.
Set a meeting to communicate in a more appropriate way, not to make others angry.
Set quiet hours, where everyone cannot make any noise during this time.
Mind the environment when making phone calls.

Lesson Context: Five Forms of Power
Welcome to today’s leadership seminar!
As members of your company’s leadership team, you have been invited to attend a seminar about the five forms of power.
Who has power brainstorm?
Who has power over you? Consider people from your family, work, city, and so on.
People who have influence over us may include our boss or other superiors at work, our peers, our family members and/or partners, police, government agencies, and so on.
Why do they have power? Where does it come from?
Power comes from different sources, e.g., a local government agency has a legal right to require people to do certain things.
The Five Forms of Power
- Expert: This is based on a person having superior skills and knowledge compared to other people.
This power is gained through having specialized knowledge or skills that others don’t have.
- Legitimate: This comes from the belief that a person has the formal right to make demands of others.
This power comes from being in a position of authority, like a manager or leader, and having the right to give orders.
- Coercive: This comes from the belief that a person can punish others for not complying with demands.
This power is based on the ability to punish or penalize others for not following rules or commands.
- Referent: This is the result of a person’s perceived attractiveness, worthiness, and right to respect.
This power comes from being admired or respected, often due to a person’s, looks, personality or qualities.
- Reward: This results from the ability to compensate others for compliance.
This power is based on the ability to offer something desirable, like money, praise, or opportunities, in exchange for following your wish or command.

In the next round we won’t have observers, just every team doing one case study.
Mariangela B.
Coco, Chris and Jamie will do Case study 3 : You are the manager of a team of 10 people. Generally, it’s an easy team to lead. One of the employees, though, does not always follow the code of conduct. He is sometimes late for work, his clothing is not very professional, and he uses bad language in the office. You want him to change how he behaves so that he doesn’t negatively influence others.
10:36 pm
Mariangela B.
Bob, Jason and Maggie you will do Case study 4: You are a well-known and well-liked manager. Your company is trying to improve the health of its employees. There are several initiatives to help staff become healthier, including health classes and subsidized exercise equipment purchase. You want your employees to take advantage of these programs.
10:38 pm
Mariangela B.
@Coco, Chris and Jamie well done on choosing ‘Coercive power’ for case 3
Mariangela B.
it’s correct because the source of the managers in that context is his ability to punish someone not following the rules
10:42 pm
Mariangela B.
@Bob, Jason and Maggie, this manager is very admired so people want to model what he does and follow what he tells them to do so it’s ‘referent power’.

LESSON CONTEXT: Learn How to Teach
Thank you for your application
You have decided to apply for a job teaching English. As part of the application process, you will do a teaching demo. This means planning a lesson and delivering it to a small group of students.
Let’s start thinking about what you want to teach!
BRAINSTORM: How do we plan a lesson?
For your teaching demo, you will be given a topic and you’ll need to plan a lesson.
What different things will you need to plan?
You will need to decide which target language to teach in relation to the topic; this could be vocabulary or grammar structures
What are the different stages of a lesson?
There are different ways to stage a lesson, but one common way is to present the target language, have students practice it in a clear, structured way, and then have students use it in a free task with a real-life context (present-practice-produce)
PRACTICE: Making a lesson for ordering food in a restaurant
Group A (Cynthia, Juna Helen): Choose 5-10 vocabulary items to teach.
Target Language:
Could I see a menu, please?
Could I order ______?

Notes
Topic: Suggesting a solution
What do you suggest we do?
e.g. We should respect the environment.
Like you mentioned it’s cause by global warming so we must stress some solutions to figure out this problem. Shut down some pollution heavy factory and prevent cutting down a tree and help the animal keep their species. Stop the carbon emission and develop some clear green resources instead of some unreasonable power (Bob).
In my opinion I just make the same opinions with Bob. We need to prevent carbon emission and encourage to plant more trees so I think it will be helpful to reduce global warming (Alan).
Firstly the government should feel great pressure to protect the environment. Take immediate action to call on the public to take actions, to do their own part. And make contribution to protect the environment. Secondly, as for the factories and the service industries, they might consider transforming to the green products instead of using the consumable products to reduce the garbage. For people, we should also do whatever we can to make the contribution to protect the environment, e.g. we should be more proactive in classifying garbage and recycling (Eva).
something eminent is that I can see a bear get stuck on a piece of iceland. What I need to do is send a boat to get the bear out of the stuck. Get to land to get food to eat. I can see this bear is looking for way to a place with lots of people or animals. Speaking of which we need to protect the environment by decrease the carbon emission. For example we should generate our electricity by hydro power and every people are encouraged to go to work by bicycle and by bus instead of driving a private car. That’s a way to decrease the carbon emission to our environment.(Jeffrey).
Task
What can you and your classmates do to help one another learn English? Make some suggestions.
My suggestion is to use English as a tool at work. If you have anything you are interested in, something to read, read a book or something that you feel you are interested in. Search it in English (Jeffrey).
I would suggest that read as much as possible. You might like to try reading at least ten pages every day. Keep doing it at least one year. You will notice that you made great progress. Pick one topic that you are interested in and talk to either your pet or your friend etc. for maybe 15 minutes a day (Eva).
One of my suggestions is to remember more vocabular=y by reading. The second is to listen to some music, I think it’s good for us for listening and pronunciation (Alan).
It is most important to have English, use it frequently. You can try to find a job in a foreign company and it’s reasonable to have a dialog every day with your colleague in English. This way you will practice and you can watch some short video in English (Bob).
Now give some alternative suggestions.
Alternatively, like you mentioned instead of use it frequently you can involved in group lesson frequently and you can watch some news which will amuse you a lot (Bob).
Instead of watching TikTok you should listen or watch some movies to learn English (Alan).
Alternative/other/different etc.
Reading English novels is a good option to improve your English. However, when you inconvenient to reading books you might what to try taking a diary in English. This way you can review the vocabulary you learned recently (Eva).
Listening, if you think that you are ready to listen to something instead of reading my alternative suggestion is you should focus on listening. Listen to some music and some lyrics are very beautiful. You start by watching animation, that’s a way to improve your listening skills. At the same time you can learn a lot of expressions (Jeffrey).
Vocabulary
Did you use any of these phrases when giving suggestions and alternatives? What else might you think?
No, I didn’t use any of these phrases in my previous answers. I also use, I suggest, one thing to keep in mind is that, have you ever considered …, how about? (Jeffrey).
Yes, I used rather than. Why not… you might consider… instead of … (Eva).
No, I didn’t use any of these phrases in my previous answers. What if… (Bob).
Thank you everyone for taking class with me today. You all did well!

Use connective phrases to compare and contract the different ideas.
The first one uses a catchy slogan and contrasts with black and white.
Despite the fact that the advertiser left plenty of the blank in the picture, consequently he influenced me to explore the exercise immediately.
Not only is the first advertisement vivid, but it’s slogan is easy to bury into my mind. Taking into consideration that so many benefits it has, I decided to buy it.
The third slogan has a more profound and passionate message. It gives us more emotional and symbolic feel. Even though the first advertisement… third advertisement convince a deeper connection.

Final Task
J/B
I think the best candidate is Lily. She has the personality of philanthropic. (I think Lily would be the best because she’s extremely philanthropic. She belongs to several charities and gives her time and money.) She will be great civic-minded/philanthropic in future. (Lily seems to be more civic-minded). Pablo is compassionate but not people-person.
Dave is pushy/audience will turn their back on him.
I’m not with you. I have a different point. In my humble opinion, Lily first time/Dave not uncomfortable with people around him. Dave ….more passion/help our charity funds take place successfully.
L/E
Lily best choice. She is philanthropic. But maybe we can help her to become Pablo.
We’re on the same page. I think Lily is the most suitable person. This is her first time. She will be dedicated and passionate in the event.
Ma/T
Pablo is compassionate. Dave has been generous but can be pushy. Recommend Lily…she is extremely philanthropic. We should provide an opportunity to her…
You raise some good points/partially agree. Maybe sometimes can be suitable…Dave can be pushy.
Je/Liry
We are planning a charity fundraiser next month. Three candidates. The best…is Dave. Dave can be pushy, great advantage, generous. We need someone who have a lot of money and resource. We need an experienced guide. Pablo is…compassionate, however…uncomfortable…The candidate need to do a lot of job to deal with people.
Although Lily is…philanthropic…first time volunteering…no experience. We have to make sure…succeed. Choose Dave…mess up.
Actually, he’s/he might be pushy. Others might put him off. Destroy the fund. Lily is very suitable/he’s…suitable (Some people might be put off by a pushy person.) philanthropic/great patience. Can’t agree. (Lily has experience working with charities and other groups. She’s a very patient and compassionate person.)
